کلاه ایمنی مهندسی از پوسته خارجی پلی اتیلن و یا pvc ساخته می شود. این مواد ماندگاری بالایی داشته و در صورت افتادن اشیا سنگین شکسته نمی شوند. فاصله بین این پوسته و یراق نیز 3 سانتی متر است و در صورت فرو رفتن پوسته باز هم با سر اصابت نخواهد داشت. یراق چهار چوب فلزی داخل کلاه است و از کاسه سر محافظت می کند. کلاه ایمنی مهندسی به کمک یک بند و یا نوار روی سر کیپ می شود و در هنگام کار از سر نمی افتد. افتادن کلاه حین کار علاوه بر خطراتی که ایجاد می کند تمرکز کارگر را نیز از او خواهد گرفت.
برای کلاه کار ساختمانی از یک سایه بان کوچک نیز استفاده می شود تا از برخورد نور خورشید با چشم و از وارد شدن ماسه و شن در چشم ها پیشگیری نماید. نوار عرقگیر نیز از ریختن عرق سر روی پیشانی ممانعت می کند. البته وجود درزهای مهندسی شده در کلاه تهویه مناسبی ایجاد میکند تا پوست سر تعریق کمتری داشته باشد.
